Parish History
A Warm and Welcoming History of St. Andrew the Apostle Church, Sudbury. A story of visionaries, parish builders, global neighbours, and one very brave priest from Chennai who now calls Sudbury home.
If you’ve ever driven through New Sudbury and wondered how St. Andrew the Apostle Church became such a lively, multicultural hub, the answer is simple: it’s been growing that way from the start -- just not quite as global as it is today.
Foundations of Faith (1955–1956)
St. Andrew the Apostle Parish began on September 15, 1955, when Bishop R.H. Dignan appointed Fr. E.T. Kennedy to lead a modest but spirited community of 275 families and two schools. The first church, consecrated on March 19, 1956, was humble in size but overflowing with hope, hospitality, and the unmistakable energy of a parish ready to flourish.
A New Church for a Growing Neighbourhood (1963)
As New Sudbury expanded, so did the parish’s dreams. Under the leadership of Monsignor J.C. Humphrey and Bishop Dignan, a larger church was envisioned — and on March 24, 1963, Bishop Alexander Carter dedicated the new St. Andrew the Apostle Church. From that moment, the parish became a true neighbourhood anchor: active, welcoming, and always ready to embrace new families.
A Parish Shaped by Its People
Over the decades, St. Andrew the Apostle has been blessed with pastors and parishioners who built not just a church, but a community. From founding pastor Fr. Kennedy to dedicated shepherds like Fr. Sam D’Angelo, Fr. Larry Rymes, Fr. Raymond Dumoulin, and others, each brought unique gifts that helped ministries grow and families deepen their faith.
Their leadership — paired with the generosity and involvement of parishioners — created the warm, unmistakable “St. Andrew spirit” that makes newcomers feel instantly at home.
Sudbury Becomes a Global Mosaic
In recent years, immigration programs such as the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) have welcomed families from South America, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Philippines, the Middle East, and Francophone countries worldwide.

Sudbury now hums with a symphony of languages — English, French, Arabic, Tagalog, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Spanish, Swahili, and more — like a choir warming up before Mass.
St. Andrew the Apostle stands at the heart of this transformation, becoming a spiritual home for newcomers seeking community, connection, and faith.
Pastor from the Diocese of Tuticorin
Fr. Denis Vaiz
Today, the parish is joyfully guided by Fr. Denis Vaiz, whose journey from the Diocese of Tuticorin, South India, to Sudbury reflects the universality of the Catholic Church. Fluent in English and Tamil — and familiar with the linguistic maze of India — he fits right into Sudbury’s increasingly multilingual landscape.
Fr. Denis is also an accomplished musician and composer, bringing creativity, warmth, and a gentle sense of humour to parish life. Whether preaching, singing, or quietly crafting new melodies, he infuses the community with joy and spiritual depth. He has even learned to embrace Sudbury winters… though a winter like 2025/26 still inspires a great deal of prayer!
A Parish That Reflects Its City
As Sudbury becomes more diverse, St. Andrew the Apostle continues to be a place where people from every continent find belonging. The parish’s long-standing culture of welcome — built over decades — makes it a natural home for families seeking faith, friendship, and purpose.
With Fr. Denis leading a community that now speaks multiple languages (and sings in just as many), the future of St. Andrew the Apostle looks every bit as vibrant as its past.
