How Do I Become a Catholic?
Your journey starts with a nudge from the Holy Spirit -- and a friendly hello from us.
Becoming Catholic isn’t about having everything figured out. It begins with a spark of curiosity, a tug on the heart, or even a quiet “Maybe I should look into this…” If that’s you, wonderful! You’re already on the path.
Start with a Conversation
Just reach out to our Parish Office. Truly -- that’s the first step. We’ll connect you with the right people, answer your questions, and help you feel at home here at St. Andrew the Apostle in Sudbury.
Explore RCIA (It’s friendlier than it sounds)
RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, but don’t let the long name fool you. It’s simply a welcoming series of gatherings where you can:

-
Learn what Catholics believe
-
Explore Scripture and the sacraments
-
Ask any question (yes, even the awkward ones)
-
Meet others who are on the same journey
No pressure. No pop quizzes. Just honest conversation and discovery.
What If I’m Not Baptized?
RCIA prepares you for the three beautiful sacraments of Christian initiation:
-
Baptism
-
Confirmation
-
Holy Eucharist
These are usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil, one of the most joyful nights of the year.
What If I Am Baptized Already?
If you were baptized in another Christian tradition, RCIA helps you enter full communion with the Catholic Church through:
-
Confirmation
-
Holy Eucharist
Your baptism is honoured and recognized -- no repeats required.
How Long Does It Take?
Most parishes follow a rhythm of weekly sessions over several months. Think of it as a spiritual journey, not a race.
You’ll also choose a sponsor -- a companion in faith who supports you, prays for you, and stands with you during the sacraments. If you don’t know who to ask, we’ll gladly help you find one.
