St. Bonaventure Church, Killarney — Celebrating 75 Years of Faith, Heritage, and Community (1951–2026)

On May 25, 2026, the village of Killarney gathered in joy and gratitude to celebrate the 75th anniversary of St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church -- a beloved mission church whose roots reach deep into the history of Northern Ontario.  This milestone coincided beautifully with another: the Catholic Women’s League marking its 100th anniversary, adding a second layer of thanksgiving to an already grace‑filled day.

A Legacy Rooted in Missionary Beginnings

The Catholic story in Killarney began in 1834, when Father Jean Baptiste Proulx, S.J., a Jesuit missionary, celebrated the first recorded Mass in the small fur‑trading and fishing settlement.

A chapel followed in 1852, later replaced in 1885 by St. Joseph’s Church, which served the community for more than six decades.  In 1951, St. Joseph’s was replaced by the present church -- St. Bonaventure -- the spiritual home that continues to welcome parishioners, cottagers, boaters, and visitors today.

A Day of Celebration and Community

The anniversary festivities began with a concert, followed by an 11:00 a.m. Mass celebrated by Bishop Thomas Dowd, Bishop of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.

Although Fr. Denis Vaiz, Pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Parish (which oversees St. Bonaventure), was away visiting his homeland of India, he ensured the celebration was well supported.  He invited Fr. John Suresh, Pastor of St. Stanislaus in Copper Cliff, to preside alongside the Bishop.

After Mass, the community enjoyed a mini‑lunch, followed by a delightful 1:00 p.m. boat cruise -- a perfect way to honour the beauty of Killarney’s waters and the fellowship of the day. The celebrations concluded with a 3:00 p.m. reception and dinner, bringing together parishioners, seasonal residents, visitors, and dignitaries in a spirit of gratitude and joy.

A Mission Church With a Unique Rhythm

St. Bonaventure is officially listed by the Diocese as:

St. Bonaventure Church Served from St. Andrew the Apostle Parish Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.

Like many rural mission churches, St. Bonaventure follows a schedule shaped by geography and pastoral responsibilities.  Because the church is served from St. Andrew the Apostle in Sudbury, the weekend Mass is traditionally celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays.

This mid‑afternoon time allows the pastor to celebrate morning Masses in Sudbury, travel the 1 hour and 20 minutes to Killarney, and serve the community during its seasonal peak months.  It is a rhythm that reflects both the dedication of the clergy and the unique character of mission ministry in Northern Ontario.

Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future

The 75th anniversary of St. Bonaventure -- and the 100th anniversary of the CWL-- was more than a commemoration of dates. It was a tribute to:

  • the missionaries who first brought the Gospel to Killarney

  • the families who built and sustained the parish

  • the priests and religious who served faithfully across generations

  • the visitors who continue to discover the beauty of this sacred place

As St. Bonaventure Church enters its next chapter, it stands as a reminder that even in the most remote and rugged corners of Northern Ontario, the light of faith continues to shine brightly.

May the next seventy‑five years be filled with the same spirit of welcome, devotion, and community that has defined St. Bonaventure since 1951.
